Raghupati Raghav Raajaaraam

This post suggests to learn a famous Hindu bhajan (religious song). It is often sung during various poojas (devotional prayers). We took this video in our neighbors house. It was winter and the neighbors organized this pooja in order to thank God for whatever good happened to them. On these occasions special people (a band) are invited and payed for singing bhajans. Usually everyone is invited and distributed prashad (food offerings or blessed food) like laddus (round Indian sweets), coconuts and dried fruits.

THE SONG LYRICS:

The version popularized by Vishnu Digambar Paluskar and the Gandhian movement:

रघुपति राघव राजाराम,
raghupati raaghav raajaaraam,
chief of the house of Raghu, Lord Rama
patit paavan sitaram
Uplifters of those who have fallen
siitaaraam, sitaram
Sita and Rama
bhaj pyaare tu sitaram
O beloved, praise Sita and Rama
Iishvar Allah tero naam,
God and Allah are your names
sab ko sanmati de bhagavaan
Bless everyone with this wisdom, Lord

*In the bhajan sung in the video these words are added too:

जय रघुनंदन जय सिया राम
जानकी वल्लभ सीताराम

Jai Raghunandan, Jai Siyaa Raam,
Jaanakii Vallabh Siita Raam.
